Feeding Management Techniques for Long-haired Rabbits

The feeding pattern of long-haired rabbits changes throughout the hair collection cycle, which typically lasts around three months. In the first month after shearing, rabbits tend to eat more because their body is still adjusting—short or no fur means they lose more body heat, so they need extra energy to maintain their temperature. By the second month, the hair starts growing rapidly, and it's crucial to ensure that the rabbits have enough feed to support this growth. By the third month, the growth rate slows down, and the rabbits' appetite decreases accordingly. Therefore, when raising long-haired rabbits, it's important to adjust the amount of feed based on the stage of the hair cycle and the rabbit’s changing eating habits. Regular grooming not only helps with hygiene but also allows more air and sunlight to reach the rabbit’s skin, stimulating endocrine activity and boosting metabolism. Shorter fur also helps with heat dissipation, especially during hot seasons. Proper feeding after shearing can improve both the quantity and quality of the hair produced. During summer, long-haired rabbits may be exposed to direct sunlight, so it's essential to provide shade and keep them cool. In winter, however, they need additional warmth and nutrition to stay healthy. Female rabbits should not be sheared close to their due date, as this could affect the development of the fetuses. It’s best to schedule hair collection during mating time, as the fur will be shorter at birth, making it easier for the young to nurse. Regular brushing is also important to remove loose hair and prevent rabbits from ingesting it, which can lead to hairball disease. Additionally, any rabbits showing signs of rickets should be treated promptly to avoid further health complications.
