Watermelon disease, also known as Phytophthora blight or "dead bug," is a serious soil-borne fungal infection that affects both young seedlings and mature watermelon plants. It is particularly prevalent during the late growth stages of the plant, especially in hot and rainy conditions. The disease spreads quickly and can cause severe damage, leading to significant crop losses. When the rainy season arrives early or when there are prolonged, heavy rains, the disease tends to appear earlier and with greater severity.
Symptoms begin on the leaves, where dark green, water-soaked spots appear in round or irregular shapes. Under high humidity, these lesions may become soft and rot, resembling scalded tissue. In drier conditions, the spots turn light brown and easily break apart. The disease then spreads to the base of the vines, forming spindle-shaped, water-soaked, dark green lesions that encircle the stem and cause it to rot. As a result, the entire affected part of the plant dies.
On the fruits, the disease manifests as dark green, water-soaked depressions that rapidly expand, leading to full fruit rot. The infected fruit emits a foul, silage-like odor, and a dense layer of white mycelium appears on the surface.
To manage this disease, early intervention is crucial. At the first sign of infection, apply one of the following fungicides: 50% Metiram wettable powder diluted at 700–800 times, 72.2% Previcur Water Dispersible Liquid diluted at 800 times, 64% Anvivir WP wettable powder diluted at 500 times, or 58% Metalaxyl-Manganese Zinc wettable powder diluted at 500 times. Spray every 7–10 days, and repeat up to 3–4 times if necessary. For better results, the same solution can be used for root irrigation, applying 0.4–0.5 liters per plant. Combining foliar spraying with root irrigation enhances the effectiveness of the treatment.
It's important to monitor the field regularly and take preventive measures, such as ensuring good drainage and avoiding overwatering, to reduce the risk of Phytophthora infection. Early detection and prompt action are key to controlling this destructive disease.
