Zucchini clams harvested in spring

Zucchini is intercropped with fragrant citrons and grown in greenhouses during the autumn and winter seasons. The harvest period falls around New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, bringing considerable economic returns. **Zucchini Cultivation** High-yielding, disease-resistant zucchini varieties with a short stature and early female flowering were selected for this cultivation. In early October, seedlings were given nutrient-rich feed to promote healthy growth. By mid-October, the seedlings were transplanted when they had three leaves and one heart. The planting layout used a large row spacing of 180 cm, a small row spacing of 50 cm, and a plant spacing of 45 cm. Before planting, a base fertilizer was applied: 4,000 to 5,000 kg of composted organic manure and 40 to 50 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 square meters, along with 0.5 to 0.75 kg of Dwarfling to prevent excessive vine growth. After transplanting, the greenhouse temperature was maintained at 18°C to 25°C during the day and 8°C to 15°C at night. During the early growth stage, watering was controlled, and the soil moisture level was kept between 70% and 80%. Throughout the growing season, regular monitoring for pests and diseases is essential. For Sclerotinia, a 50% SulfoMax solution diluted 800 to 1,000 times or a 70% thiophanate-methyl solution at 800 to 1,000 times can be used. Alternatively, 500 times diluted Ke Tou Ling is also effective. Timely treatment helps maintain plant health. During the flowering period, applying a 2,4-D solution (30 mg per liter) to the female stigma or performing artificial pollination can increase fruit set. Fertilization should be done carefully, using foliar feeding rather than over-fertilizing. Watering should be done on sunny days, avoiding waterlogging. Pruning is important—remove old, weak, or diseased leaves, as well as side vines and tendrils. When temperatures rise and fruits are fully developed, additional fertilization may be needed. Harvesting occurs just before and after New Year’s Day to ensure peak quality. **Citron Cultivation** For sweet sorghum, seedlings are first transplanted from the field. Field seedlings are planted about 30 to 35 days before transplanting. In mid-November, two rows of plants were arranged in a north-south direction in Daejeon. Tall varieties were placed in the north, while dwarf types were in the south, with a spacing of 30 cm between rows and 20 cm between plants. After planting, sufficient water was provided. Five to seven days after the buds sprout, warm water at 20°C to 25°C was sprayed onto the plants. When the sweet medlar reaches 10 cm to 15 cm in length, a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution is sprayed. Harvesting begins when the plants reach 20 cm to 30 cm in height. A single harvest is conducted every 15 to 20 days, allowing for 3 to 4 harvests in total. The final harvest is moved to Daejeon in April. This detailed approach ensures both high-quality zucchini and fragrant citrons are produced efficiently, making the entire process both sustainable and profitable.
