Zucchini clams harvested in spring

Zucchini is interplanted with fragrant citrons and grown in greenhouses during the autumn and winter seasons. The harvest occurs around New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, offering substantial economic returns. The cultivation of zucchini involves selecting high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties that are short in stature and have a low female flowering stage. In early October, seedlings are given nutrient-rich feed. By mid-October, when the plants have three leaves and one heart, they are transplanted into the field. The spacing is set at 180 cm between large rows, 50 cm between small rows, and 45 cm between individual plants. A base fertilizer is applied before planting, with 4,000 to 5,000 kg of composted organic manure and 40 to 50 kg of compound fertilizer per 667 square meters. Additionally, 0.5 to 0.75 kg of Dwarfling is used to prevent excessive vine growth. After planting, the greenhouse temperature is maintained at 18°C to 25°C during the day and 8°C to 15°C at night. During the early growth phase, water is carefully controlled, and the soil’s relative humidity should be kept between 70% and 80%. Throughout the growing season, it's important to monitor and manage pests and diseases. For Sclerotinia, a 50% SulfoMax solution diluted 800 to 1,000 times or 70% thiophanate-methyl diluted 800 to 1,000 times can be used. Alternatively, 500-fold Ke Tou Ling is also effective. During the flowering period, a 30 mg/L solution of 2,4-D can be applied to the female stigma or artificial pollination can be used to improve fruit set. Foliar fertilization is recommended, while watering should be done on sunny days without wetting the fruits. Pruning is essential—remove old, weak, or diseased leaves, side vines, and tendrils. When temperatures rise and fruits are developing, additional fertilization is applied. The zucchinis are harvested just before and after New Year’s Day. For citron cultivation, sweet sorghum seedlings are first transplanted from the field. Seedlings are prepared for transplanting about 30 to 35 days before planting. In mid-November, two rows of plants are planted in a north-south orientation. Tall varieties are placed in the north, and dwarf types in the south, with 30 cm between rows and 20 cm between plants. Water is applied immediately after planting. Once the buds sprout, warm water (20°C to 25°C) is sprayed on the plants. When the sweet medlar reaches 10 to 15 cm in length, a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution is sprayed. Harvesting takes place when the fruit is 20 to 30 cm long, with one harvest every 15 to 20 days, allowing for 3 to 4 harvests. The crop is moved to Daejeon in April.
