Watermelon disease, also known as Phytophthora blight or "dead bug," is a soil-borne fungal infection that affects both young seedlings and mature watermelon plants. It tends to develop more severely during the later stages of growth, especially under high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The disease spreads quickly and can cause significant damage if not controlled early. When the rainy season arrives earlier than usual, with prolonged and heavy rains, the outbreak occurs sooner and becomes more severe, leading to greater crop losses. The peak of the disease often appears right after a heavy rainfall.
The symptoms begin on the leaves, where dark green, water-soaked spots appear in round or irregular shapes. Under high humidity, these spots may become soft and mushy, resembling burns from boiling water. In drier conditions, the spots turn light brown and easily break apart. As the disease progresses, the base of the vines show spindle-shaped, water-soaked, dark green lesions that eventually encircle and rot the stem, causing the entire plant to wilt and die.
On the fruit, the disease manifests as dark green, water-soaked depressions that rapidly expand, leading to full fruit rot. The affected fruit emits a sour, fermented odor, and white, dense mycelium can be seen on the surface.
To manage this disease, it is crucial to start treatment at the first sign of infection. Apply 50% mancozeb wettable powder diluted at 700–800 times, 72.2% propamocarb hydrochloride at 800 times, 64% acibenzolar-S-methyl wettable powder at 500 times, or 58% metalaxyl-manganese zinc wettable powder at 500 times. Spray every 7–10 days, and repeat up to 3–4 times for better control. In severe cases, the same solution can be used to drench the roots, applying 0.4–0.5 liters per plant. Combining foliar sprays with root irrigation usually yields the best results. Early intervention is key to preventing widespread damage and ensuring a healthy harvest.
