The Prevention and Treatment of Nectarine Shrinkage in Sunlight Greenhouse

1. Symptoms of Damage: This disease primarily affects the leaves, but can also damage flowers, young shoots, and fruit in severe cases. At the early stage of infection, newly emerged leaves appear red and curled. As the leaves develop, the curling becomes more pronounced, leading to uneven leaf shapes, thickened and crispy textures, and a yellow-green or mottled coloration. In the later stages of the disease, the leaves turn reddish-brown, and a grayish-white waxy layer (the ascosporic layer of the pathogen) often appears on the surface. When humidity is high inside the greenhouse, infected leaves may scorch, wilt, or rot, resulting in premature leaf drop. Once the leaves on the shoots die, it can stimulate the growth of axillary buds, producing secondary shoots. Although the new leaves are not affected, the shoots remain underdeveloped, and a cluster of small, dense leaves may form.

2. Control Methods

(1) During the early stages of the disease, infected leaves should be promptly removed and taken out of the greenhouse for proper disposal to prevent further spread.

(2) If a significant number of leaves have fallen, it's important to apply fertilizers to help restore the tree’s vitality and promote recovery.

(3) During the nectarine leaf emergence phase, if there are continuous cloudy days, ensure proper ventilation within the greenhouse to reduce humidity and lower the risk of disease development.

(4) Before the temperature rises in the greenhouse, apply a 5 ppm lime sulfur solution. After the leaves have fully expanded or at the first sign of infection, spray with one of the following fungicides: 25% triadimefon diluted 1500 times, 70% mancozeb diluted 500 times, or 50% carbendazim diluted 800 times. It's recommended to alternate these treatments to avoid resistance and improve effectiveness.
