Management after grafting of oil tea sprouts

After grafting, it's important to provide timely shade cover. About 20 days post-grafting, start removing unwanted sprouts and dead plants from the rootstock, continuing this process until September. Once the seedlings have settled into their new environment, ensure consistent moisture levels. Around 40 days after grafting, when many buds begin to sprout, you can proceed with covering them. Focus on removing flower buds, as they often coexist with axillary buds and may hinder the healthy growth of the seedlings. Carefully remove any flower buds to promote better development. Temperature and humidity control is crucial during the first month after grafting, which is a critical period for seedling survival. If high temperatures and drought occur, seedlings may suffer from sunburn; in such cases, increase the shading to reduce light exposure. During prolonged rainy periods, waterlogging can lead to root rot, so increase ventilation by opening the film at both ends to allow drainage and air circulation. When moving the seedlings again in mid-July, remove the plastic cover either earlier or on a cloudy day following rain. For disease prevention, the primary issue in the first year is white peony disease, also known as sclerotinia root rot. Symptoms include brown lesions at the base of the stem, followed by white cotton-like fungal growth. The affected area expands upward, forming a white silken layer on the soil surface. To manage this, remove infected plants, clear contaminated soil, and apply a 19% copper sulfate solution to the roots for disinfection and protection. To accelerate afforestation, consider using nutrient-rich bags. Two methods are available: transplant freshly grown seedlings into bags filled with nutrient-rich soil, or move nursery-grown seedlings from the bed into the bags. The best time to transplant Camellia oleifera grafted seedlings into nutrition bags is between late September and early October. In the following year, focus on weeding, removing impurities, fertilizing, topping the seedlings, and preventing anthracnose. Apply 50% carbendazim diluted 1000 times or 1% Bordeaux mixture 3-4 times depending on the disease incidence. Spray once after spring shoot growth, and again in early June if symptoms appear, possibly twice if necessary. Seedlings are ready for planting when they meet specific standards: the graft union should be fully healed, with numerous fibrous roots and 4-5 evenly distributed lateral roots. Nutrient bag seedlings should be over 10 cm tall, while bare-root seedlings need to be more than 20 cm tall, with a trunk diameter exceeding 0.3 cm and visible branches.
