Potted strawberries should be planted in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. It's recommended to add a base fertilizer such as cooked chicken manure or bean cake to ensure the plants have enough nutrients from the start. The best time to repot new plants is from late September to mid-October, when the temperature is moderate and ideal for recovery and growth. When planting, make sure the soil is gently compacted, and the base of the seedling should be level with the soil surface. Planting too deep can lead to root rot, while planting too shallow may expose the stems, causing them to dry out.
For older strawberry plants that are productive, it's important to add nutrient-rich soil to the pots before new roots develop in autumn. If there are too many stalks, you can trim some of them to promote better growth. Strawberries require plenty of sunlight; without adequate light, the plants may grow weak and produce fewer flowers. After the plants sprout in early spring, apply a liquid fertilizer every 10 days. Before flowering, increase the frequency of fertilizing to keep the soil consistently moist. With proper nutrition and water, the plants will produce more fruits and fewer non-productive flowers.
During the growing season, remove any dry, diseased leaves, and thin lateral buds promptly. Also, eliminate unnecessary pods and small offshoots to focus the plant’s energy on fruit production. When the fruits ripen between May and June, the red berries and green leaves create a beautiful sight. However, during this time, it's important to water the fruits carefully and keep the berries clean. Place kraft paper under the flowers and lift drooping fruits off the ground to prevent them from touching the soil.
After flowering, continue to provide top dressing to support growth. From July onward, temperatures rise, so ensure sufficient watering and mist the leaves appropriately to maintain humidity. In winter, strawberries enter a dormant phase. In the Yangtze River valley, it's safe to overwinter them indoors. During this period, stop fertilizing and reduce watering, keeping the soil slightly moist. Finally, make sure to repot the plants every three years to maintain their health and productivity.
