Recently, I was gifted a piece of hand-me-down furniture, and let me tell you, I was practically jumping for joy—almost as excited as getting it for free! One thing I hear quite often from people is that they struggle with styling, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite tips and tricks to help you create something truly special.

Let’s dive into my top six styling principles that I swear by:

1. Highs & Lows

Always incorporate items of varying heights. This creates visual interest and gives the eye multiple focal points. Whether it’s a tall vase or a low stack of books, mixing heights ensures your space feels dynamic and inviting.

2. Groups of Three

Odd numbers just work better in styling. I tend to gravitate toward groups of three—it adds balance and symmetry without being too predictable. I might secretly have a little thing against even numbers… who knows?

3. Color Coordination

If you’re ever stuck trying to pull together a cohesive look, grouping items of similar colors is your saving grace. It instantly creates a sense of harmony and makes everything feel like it belongs together.

4. Find Your Style

Not everyone is going to love the same things, and that’s okay! Embrace what speaks to you. If you’re a fan of quirky knick-knacks or vintage finds, don’t shy away from incorporating them into your decor. Your space should reflect who you are.

5. Get Creative

Look around your home for items you can repurpose or rethink. For example, I needed a pedestal for some faux pears, so I flipped a vintage bowl upside down and added a plate on top. Voilà! Instant pedestal. You’d be surprised how many unique styling solutions are hiding in plain sight.

6. Group Similar Objects

When styling, grouping similar items together—like vases, frames, or books—creates a natural flow. It’s not just aesthetically pleasing but also helps tie everything together.

Styling doesn’t have to be intimidating, and it’s definitely not one-size-fits-all. The most important thing is to have fun with it and experiment until you find what works best for you. Happy styling, everyone!
