#PROJECTdecor Guest Blogger:: The Art of Styling

We're thrilled to welcome Shelby Goodman as one of our Guest Bloggers for #PROJECTdecor! We've been big fans of her work over at Honeysuckle Finds, and when we started brainstorming ideas for this project, Shelby was at the top of our list. She brings such a unique perspective and creativity to home decor, and we couldn't be happier to have her as part of our team. This is Shelby's first installment of four, where she'll be sharing tons of inspiration, practical tips, and so much more! As someone who loves to style spaces, Shelby knows how daunting it can be for others to get started. So today, she’s sharing some of her favorite tricks and principles to help make the process easier and more fun. Whether you're new to styling or looking to refresh your space, these tips will give you the confidence to create something truly special. --- **1.高低搭配** One of the most important things to keep in mind is variety in height. By incorporating items of different sizes—tall vases next to shorter books—you add depth and dimension to your display. Your eyes naturally move around the arrangement, creating a dynamic feel. I recently came across a hand-me-down piece of furniture, and let me tell you, I was absolutely thrilled about styling it. The joy of making something old feel new again? Priceless. --- **2. Groups of Three** This rule is one of my go-to guidelines when it comes to arranging items. Odd numbers tend to look better than even ones because they create balance without feeling too symmetrical. For example, three candles on a mantel or three picture frames on a wall instantly feel balanced yet interesting. When I’m stuck trying to figure out how to arrange things, I always default to this principle—it just works! --- **3. Color Coordination** If you’re struggling to achieve cohesion in your displays, grouping items by color is an easy way to pull everything together. Whether it’s a monochromatic palette or complementary hues, color creates harmony and makes any grouping pop. For instance, I once styled a small shelf using only shades of blue and white. It looked clean and cohesive, but still had plenty of personality. --- **4. Embrace Your Style** There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to decorating. Some people might cringe at the idea of collecting quirky knick-knacks, but for me, it’s part of who I am. If there’s something that speaks to you personally—whether it’s vintage finds, handmade ceramics, or family heirlooms—don’t shy away from including those elements in your space. My own home reflects my love for whimsical touches like owl figurines and antique teacups. Don’t be afraid to celebrate what makes your space uniquely yours. --- **5. Think Outside the Box** Sometimes, all you need is a little creativity to elevate your decor game. Take my recent project, for example. I needed a pedestal for some faux pears I had lying around, but instead of running to the store, I repurposed a vintage bowl and plate. Voila! Instant pedestal. You’d be surprised how many everyday objects can serve double duty if you think creatively. --- **6. Group Similar Items Together** Whether it’s books, glassware, or decorative bowls, clustering similar items adds visual interest. It also helps tie different areas of your home together, giving each room its own identity while maintaining a sense of continuity throughout. Recently, I rearranged my living room bookshelf, grouping novels by genre and adding small decorative accents like sea shells and miniature plants. The result? A cozy, inviting vibe that feels distinctly mine. --- And there you have it—six simple yet effective ways to take your styling skills to the next level. Happy decorating, and don’t forget to enjoy the process along the way! P.S.
