Plastic greenhouses are widely used in the northern regions for cultivating mushrooms. These structures help overcome harsh environmental conditions such as low temperatures and dry air, effectively extending the growth period of the fungi. Under natural outdoor conditions, mushroom production typically occurs from June to September. However, with the use of plastic greenhouses, the growing season can be extended from April to December of the following year.
The controlled environment inside the greenhouse helps raise temperatures and maintain humidity, allowing for earlier inoculation of the mushroom spawn—up to two weeks ahead of schedule. After inoculation, the mushroom logs are arranged in a "well" shape within the shed, without the need for extra covering materials like plastic films or straw curtains. Once most of the fruiting bodies begin to appear, they are carefully stacked and placed on crossbars in a "person" shape.
Due to the limited floor space in the shed, it's common to place 1 to 2 layers on each side. The temperature inside the shed should be kept between 20°C and 28°C. If the temperature rises above 30°C, shading the roof canopy and spraying cold water on the roof and surrounding walls can help cool down the environment. At the same time, increasing ventilation is essential to reduce internal heat. When temperatures drop too low, doors and windows should be closed in the afternoon, and straw curtains should be drawn to retain warmth. In the morning, the curtains are opened to allow sunlight to warm the area.
After summer, when the outside temperature stabilizes above 20°C, the plastic coverings can be removed, and the mushrooms can be grown directly in the shed. However, partial shading is still necessary to prevent direct sunlight from damaging the crops. As temperatures gradually decrease, the plastic film can be reapplied for insulation.
It’s important to spray water into the shed both in the morning and evening to maintain humidity levels between 80% and 90%. After harvesting, watering should be temporarily stopped, the plastic cover lifted, and the mushrooms left to dry for 3 to 4 days. This allows them to receive full sunlight and airflow, which encourages mycelium development before resealing the area for continued growth.
