The rattan geranium, commonly known as ivy geranium, has become a popular choice for European balcony planters, hanging baskets, and flower displays. It was introduced to China just last year and is now widely used in hanging flower pots and tall containers. The most commonly cultivated varieties are 'Tornado' and 'Summer Rains'. Among these, 'Tornado' stands out for its strong branching ability, short internodes, compact growth habit, and excellent resistance to heat and rain. On the other hand, 'Summer Rains' offers vibrant colors such as pink, purple, magenta, white, and more, making it ideal for colorful combinations.
Most F1 seeds are coated for better germination and performance. The optimal growing temperature is between 18–21°C. In most regions of China, sowing typically takes place in September, with seedlings ready by November. As long as temperatures remain above 0°C, the plants can survive the winter and resume growth from March to April, producing flowers by May. In warmer areas or during winter, summer alpine cultivation is often used, allowing the plants to be sold before New Year’s Day. When planted in hanging pots, it behaves like an annual flower.
Rattan geranium thrives in well-drained soil with a pH around 6.0, slightly more acidic than regular geraniums. Planting depth should not be too deep to avoid root rot and disease. During the growing season, consistent watering and fertilization are essential. Lack of water can cause yellowing at the base of leaves and delayed flowering. In the later growth stages, potassium fertilizer should be increased. Watering and fertilizing should be reduced when temperatures drop below 5°C or rise above 30°C.
In hot summer regions, pruning is often done before the heat sets in. This helps control water and nutrient intake, allowing the plant to rest safely and recover when cooler weather returns in late September. With proper care, the plant can bloom again in November. Chlormequat (CCC) is effective on rattan geranium, usually applied at 250–500 ppm. It should be sprayed when the seedling has four true leaves and watered after 24 hours. A temporary yellowing may occur, but it disappears quickly. Spraying should stop once flower buds appear.
Typically, rattan geranium is grown in 15 cm diameter pots. When used in larger planters, two plants per 60 cm container are common. It pairs well with other flowers like cineraria and is often used in mixed plantings. In garden settings, spacing ranges from 6 to 9 plants per square meter, creating a visually appealing display. With its graceful vines, bright colors, and rich palette, the rattan geranium is the perfect choice for balcony planters, hanging baskets, and decorative wall plantings. It softens the visual lines and adds depth to any space, making it a versatile and attractive addition to any garden or outdoor area.
