The rattan geranium, also known as ivy geranium, has become a popular choice for European balcony planters, hanging flower baskets, and decorative flower arrangements. It was recently introduced to China and is now widely used in hanging pots and tall containers. The most commonly cultivated varieties are 'Tornado' and 'Summer Rains'. Among these, 'Tornado' stands out for its strong branching ability, short internodes, compact growth habit, and excellent resistance to heat and rain. On the other hand, 'Summer Rains' offers vibrant colors such as pink, purple, magenta, white, and more, making it ideal for colorful combinations.
Most F1 seeds are coated for easier handling and better germination. The optimal growing temperature ranges from 18°C to 21°C. In most regions of China, sowing typically takes place in September, with seedlings ready by November. If temperatures remain above 0°C, the plants can survive the winter and resume growth in March or April, producing flowers by May. In warmer areas or during winter, summer alpine cultivation is often used, allowing the plants to be sold before the New Year.
As an annual plant, it is commonly grown in hanging pots. It thrives in well-drained soil with a pH around 6.0, which can be slightly acidic compared to regular geraniums. Planting depth should not be too deep to avoid root rot and diseases. During the growing season, consistent watering and fertilization are essential. Lack of water can cause yellowing at the base of the leaves and delayed flowering. Potassium fertilizer should be increased in the later stages of growth. When temperatures drop below 5°C or rise above 30°C, watering and fertilizing should be reduced.
In hot summer regions, pruning is often done before the peak heat to help the plant enter a rest period. This allows it to survive the heat and bloom again in late September or November. The application of chlormequat (CCC) is effective on vine geraniums, typically at concentrations of 250–500 ppm. It should be applied when the plant has four true leaves, and after spraying, watering should be avoided for 24 hours. A temporary yellowing may occur, but this fades quickly. Spraying should stop once flower buds appear.
Rattan geraniums are usually planted in 15 cm diameter pots. For larger planters, two plants per 60 cm pot are common. They are often paired with other flowers like cineraria to create striking displays. In garden settings, spacing between plants is typically 6–9 per square meter, resulting in a lush and attractive arrangement. With its graceful vines, bright colors, and rich hues, the rattan geranium is the perfect choice for balcony planters and hanging baskets. It's also widely used for decorating low fences, combining potted plants, and enhancing floral displays. Its soft visual lines add depth and elegance to any space.
