Origin: Native to China and Japan, this plant is widely cultivated in provinces across the Yangtze River basin in China.

Morphological Characteristics:

Southern bamboo, also known as Heavenly Bamboo, is an evergreen, upright shrub that can grow up to 2 meters tall. It has few branches and features alternate, pinnate compound leaves that are typically 30–50 cm long. Each leaf has a long petiole, and the leaf sheath wraps around the stem. The leaves are leathery, elliptic-lanceolate in shape, with a long tip and smooth margins.

The plant produces large, terminal panicles of small, white flowers, which are bisexual. Flowering occurs from May to July, and the fruits ripen between September and October.

Growth Habits:

Nandina thrives in warm and humid climates. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. When exposed to bright light, its leaves turn a striking red color, making it particularly attractive during autumn and winter. This plant is relatively cold-tolerant.

It grows well in sandy loam soil with good drainage and is often found at forest edges or on calcareous soils.

Propagation Methods:

Nandina can be propagated through sowing, cuttings, or division. However, sowing and division are the most commonly used methods.

Cultivation and Care:

During the growing season, the potting soil should remain consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot and cause the plant to drop its leaves.

Potted plants should be repotted every 3 to 5 years. Applying liquid fertilizer two to three times a year helps maintain healthy growth. After the fruit drops, it's advisable to prune the dried inflorescence to keep the plant tidy and promote better appearance.

Garden Use:

Nandina is highly valued for its ornamental value. Its sparse foliage turns vibrant red in autumn and winter, and it bears numerous red berries that remain on the plant for a long time. This makes it an excellent choice for both flowering and fruiting displays.

In traditional gardens, it is often planted near rock formations, in front of courtyard houses, or along walls. It can also be grown in pots or shaped into bonsai.

Additionally, various parts of the plant—roots, stems, flowers, leaves, and fruits—have medicinal uses in traditional Chinese medicine.
