Honeysuckle Silver Flower Double Flower

Alias: Silver Flower, Double Flower, Erbao Flower

Family Genus: Caprifoliaceae

Species: Perennial Evergreen Winding Vine

Plant Morphology:

This plant is a semi-shrub and evergreen. Young shoots are densely covered with fine hairs and glandular hairs, while older branches are tan in color, smooth, and hollow. The leaves are opposite, ovate to elongated-ovate, measuring 3–8 cm in length and 1.5–4 cm in width. They are hairy on both sides when young but become hairless on the upper surface as they mature. Flowers grow in pairs or as twins, with pubescent pedicels and flowers. The corolla starts off white and turns yellow over time. The outer surface is covered with soft lines and glandular hairs, and the corolla tube is slender. There are five stamens that extend beyond the corolla, and the ovary is inferior. The fruit is spherical and turns black when cooked.

Flowering occurs from April to June, and the fruiting period lasts from July to October.

Growth Habits and Distribution:

This plant typically grows along roadsides, on hill slopes, or in sparse forests. It is widely distributed across most parts of the country.

The flower is always found in pairs within the leaf axils, which is why it is called "Double Flower." Due to its ability to retain old leaves until late autumn, while new green leaves appear, it is also known as "Lonicera," symbolizing resilience and renewal.

According to the "Materia Medica," honeysuckle is highly effective in detoxifying, treating phlegm, swellings, sores, red boils, and various types of poison. It is considered an essential medicinal herb. The famous "Yinqiao Jiedu Pill" is based on this herb. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that honeysuckle has significant effects on upper respiratory tract infections, influenza, tonsillitis, acute appendicitis, erysipelas, and traumatic infections. In traditional practices, people often brew honeysuckle tea during midsummer to help reduce fever and combat summer heat.

Honeysuckle is adaptable and grows quickly, with climbing vines that can spread for tens of meters. In summer, its fragrance helps to soothe the heat; in winter, its green leaves bring a sense of vitality and beauty to gardens and walkways.

Usage:

Fresh honeysuckle flowers are fragrant and rich in nectar. In rural areas, children often collect the flowers to extract honey. Dried honeysuckle flowers, either air-dried or pressed into green tea, are the final products used in teas.

There are two main types of honeysuckle tea available in the market. One blends fresh honeysuckle with a small amount of green tea, using a scented tea brewing process to highlight the floral aroma. The other is made by drying honeysuckle and mixing it with green tea. While the first type offers a stronger floral flavor, the second maintains the medicinal properties of honeysuckle without compromising its health benefits.

Honeysuckle tea is a healthy beverage suitable for all ages, especially popular during the summer months for its cooling and refreshing properties.
