**Half-Branch Lotus: A Vibrant and Easy-to-Grow Flower**
The Half-Branch Lotus, also known as Long Xi Peony, Pine Needle Peony, Big Flower Purslane, or Sunflower, is commonly called "Can't Die" due to its resilience. It is an annual herb from the purslane family, known for its hardy nature and beautiful blooms. This plant typically grows between 10 to 15 cm in height, with stems that are similar in appearance, fleshy, and covered in fine hairs. The leaves are alternate or scattered, about 2.5 cm long, and have a thick, fleshy texture.
The flowers of the Half-Branch Lotus are either solitary or clustered at the top of the branches, with 1 to 4 blossoms per stem. Each flower measures between 2.5 to 4 cm in diameter and can be single or double-petaled. The color palette is rich and varied, including white, yellow, red, pink, purple, orange, and many complex combinations. These vibrant colors make it a popular choice for gardens and flower beds.
Native to South America, particularly Brazil, this plant is now widely cultivated across China. It thrives in warm conditions and is not frost-tolerant. As a sun-loving plant, it requires full sunlight during midday. In low light conditions, the flowers may close or fail to open fully. However, recent breeding efforts have introduced full-day flowering varieties that do not require intense sunlight.
The Half-Branch Lotus is drought-resistant and can tolerate occasional flooding. It prefers well-drained, loose, and fertile sandy soil. It is adaptable and easy to propagate through seeds or cuttings. For seed propagation, sowing is typically done in mid-April when temperatures are above 20°C. Seedlings should be planted in sandy loam soil, with the planting area finely tilled and watered. After the water has soaked in, any depressions or cracks should be filled with fine soil, and a thin layer of soil should be spread over the seedlings.
After preparing the soil, the seeds are mixed with fine sand and evenly distributed. The seeds should be lightly covered, but not buried. Watering should be avoided immediately after sowing. If dry and windy weather occurs, a curtain or plastic film can be used to cover the area for insulation and moisture retention. Seedlings usually emerge within 7 to 10 days and grow to about 3 to 4 cm in height. At this point, they can be transplanted, spaced 10 cm apart, and will typically bloom within two months.
For larger plants, bare-root transplanting is also possible. Cuttings can be taken anytime during the growing season and planted directly in the garden or in pots. When using potted soil, it's best to use old potting mix with high humic content. After disinfection, half of the soil should be replaced with sandy loam, and a small amount of decomposed organic fertilizer added.
Throughout the growing period, the plant should be placed in a sunny location. The potting soil should not remain wet for long periods—water only when necessary. Fertilization is generally not required. The fruits mature at different times, and the seeds tend to split easily. It's best to harvest them as soon as the fruits turn brown, then dry and store them properly.
