Snow in June, scientifically known as *Clerodendrum trichotomum*, is a genus belonging to the Rubiaceae family. It is native to the southern regions of the Yangtze River basin in China. This evergreen shrub features small, opposite leaves that are elliptical and pointed, with a leathery texture. The leaves have an acuminate apex and are often clustered at the tips of the branches. Its stipules are membranous, broad at the base, and feature several bristles on top.
The flowers of Snow in June are small and white, resembling snowflakes, which is why it's named so. They typically bloom in June, and the flowers can be either single or double. This plant thrives in warm conditions but can tolerate some shade and cold. It is easy to grow, requires minimal fertilizer, and prefers well-drained sandy loam soil. When cultivated indoors, it should be moved into a greenhouse by mid-October, where the temperature should be maintained between 10°C and 15°C. Watering once a week is sufficient, and shading should be removed in late April. Keeping the soil consistently moist helps it grow vigorously.
Snow in June is a semi-evergreen shrub that blooms twice a year—once from April to October and again from June to July. The flowers come in white and light purple shades, making it a beautiful ornamental plant. It is highly adaptable, resistant to pruning, and ideal for creating hedges or topiaries. When grown as a bonsai, it remains green all year round as long as the potting soil stays moist.
Traditionally, propagation was done through cuttings, which was time-consuming and required specific growing beds. However, modern methods using spraying have significantly improved efficiency. The process involves preparing loose, well-aerated soil, leveling the ground, and placing one- to two-node cuttings (about 3 cm long) evenly across the surface. After pressing the cuttings firmly into the soil and watering them, misting every other day helps promote root development. Within 10 days, new buds begin to form. A diluted liquid fertilizer is applied after 25 days, followed by a 1:1000 urea solution after 50 days. Seedlings can be transplanted after two months, and potted plants can be ready within four months. After one year, they can be shaped into ideal bonsai with hanging roots. For hedgerows, shaping takes about six months.
