Cultivating Large-Scale Squid Species
(a) Cultivating Large-Size Squid Species
1. Pond Conditions:
The ponds used for squid farming should have a sandy bottom with minimal silt, an area of 2 to 3 acres, and a water depth of at least 1.5 meters. They must have convenient drainage and irrigation systems, clear water without turbidity, no sewage inflow, and a small amount of submerged aquatic plants. New ponds should be evaluated based on soil quality. Acidic or turbid water ponds are unsuitable for raising catfish.
2. Pond Preparation and Feed Fish Cultivation:
(1) On April 5th, the pond should be treated with quicklime and grass fertilizer placed in the corners around April 10th (if the bottom is good, no fertilizer is needed). Add 0.8 to 1.0 meters of fresh water to cultivate natural feed fish.
(2) Common feed fish include carp fry. Around April 15th, salmon eggs in floats are placed in the pond for hatching, with fry density controlled at about 500,000 per mu. Eggs can be hatched in 2–3 batches, such as 1–3–5, to ensure balanced nutrition for different sizes of fry.
(3) Control the size of feed fish by selecting fry of about 2 cm and feeding them with fish of about 1.2 cm.
3. Stocking and Breeding of Salmon Fry:
(1) Place eel fry the day before and add 10 cm of water (e.g., change 1/3 of the water).
(2) The stocking density of carp fry is about 4,000 fish per mu.
(3) Monitor feed fish density and replenish when necessary.
(4) Keep an eye on water quality and weather changes.
(5) Disease prevention includes pests like oblique beetles and trichoderma, with low incidence of ringworm. Follow adult fish culture methods for control.
(b) Adult Carp Breeding
1. Fish Pond Conditions
Ponds for adult squid farming require a sandy bottom with less silt (about 15 cm), an area of 3–8 mu, water depth of over 1.5 meters, convenient drainage, clean water, and some submerged plants. A shallow ditch 30–40 cm deep should be dug around the pond for fishing purposes.
(1) Disinfect the pond with lime 10–12 days before introducing bait fish.
(2) Cultivate natural bait by adding 60 cm of water 7 days before stocking fry (carp, silver carp, squid, etc.). Apply about 150 kg of fertilized manure per acre to promote zooplankton like rotifers and copepods.
(3) Cultivate feed fish:
- Common species include white sea bass, squid, and others, with about 300,000 fish per mu.
- Introduce fry the day before, add 10 cm of fresh water to enrich the environment. Do not feed immediately after stocking; monitor fry density, health, and growth daily. When red worms decrease, use thick slurry to "spout the beach." Observe each feeding point multiple times a day. Adjust feeding based on early and late stages. Maintain feed fish size at 3–4 cm when stocking 8–10 cm salmon.
- Small loach can also be added for high-quality bait.
- The ratio of cod farming area to feed pond area is typically 1:3–4.
3. Stocking of Carp Species
(1) Before stocking puffer fish, drain half the water and refill with fresh water to make it slightly lean. Gradually increase the water level to more than 1.5 meters.
(2) Stocking density is about 800 fish per mu.
4. Feeding Management
(1) Feed Fish Selection: Carp, silver carp, grass carp, and other species can be used.
(2) Feeding Techniques:
- Regularly supplement feed fish every 1–3 days.
- Assess feed fish availability: If sufficient, catfish chase them at the bottom, producing small splashes. If short, they feed near the surface, creating larger splashes and frequent sounds. If squid hunt at the edge, feed fish are nearly gone.
- Palatability: Feed fish should be about 1/3 the length of catfish. Screen large fish if sizes vary.
(2) Water Quality Management:
- Maintain water clarity at 30 cm, keeping it “fat, live, and cool†year-round. Add fresh water every 5–7 days during June–September, adding 15–20 cm each time. Change water after drug use to avoid phytotoxicity.
- In case of bad weather, add water immediately to maintain stable water levels. Use alum (1 kg per acre) or lime (5–7.5 kg per acre) if water is cloudy.
- Install aerators to prevent oxygen depletion. Turn on during sunny midday or hot nights. Have hydrogen peroxide (30%+) or aeration spirit ready for emergencies. Use 250 ml per acre with 500 ml water and 3–5 ml ferrous sulfate.
5. Fish Disease Control
(1) Ciliate disease: Parasites like trichomonads and slug affect salmon. Treat with 20PPM formaldehyde. Copper sulfate has limited effect, while Shanghai fish killer is effective.
(2) Anchor head disease: Infected areas show inflammation and necrosis. Use “strong insect killer†or “enemy fish insect†in the pool. Avoid trichlorfon. Soak infected fish in 20PPM potassium permanganate for 15 minutes.
(3) Fish larvae: Reduce food intake and halt growth. Treat similarly to anchor head disease.
(4) Cylindrotheca sinensis: Causes thin bodies and dark color. Use “Worm-killing King†or “Fish-Like Comet II.â€
(5) Bacterial rotting: Spray “Strong Chlorine†or “Chuanfenjing†at 0.27 kg or 0.33 kg per acre. Combine with medicated baits for 7–10 days.
(6) Hemorrhagic disease: Treated with 0.4PPM “Strong Chlorine†or alternatives. Repeat daily if needed. Use “Jue Jue Ning†with 12.5 kg per bag. Prepare bait with 50% wheat flour and 50% cake. Mix with medicine and feed one hour later. Feed for 5–10 days depending on condition. Always disinfect after water changes.
