English breeds genetically engineered chickens that can lay cancer-resistant eggs

Researchers at the Rothlyn Institute in the UK, who had been known for the cultivation of cloned sheep, have recently cultivated a genetically modified hen that contains proteins that are resistant to cancer and other diseases.

According to British media reports, researchers first selected two proteins, one is the antibody miR24 that can be used to treat skin cancer, and it is also effective for arthritis; the other is human interferon b-1a, which belongs to the immune system. Protein that can attack tumors and viruses and stop the virus from replicating in cells.

Subsequently, the researchers developed a virus that carries the human gene that can synthesize the two proteins and infected the chick with an early embryo. These viruses can implant human genes in new DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Researchers then hatch these eggs and find the cock carrying the human gene in semen. After mating with the hens, these roosters breed the next generation of chicks. And so on, through repeated breeding, the egg hens laid under the genetically modified hens carry anticancer drugs.

The researchers said that the industrial production of the above two proteins is time consuming and costly. The new method does not have the above problems, but the specific drug development work may take 10 years to develop. Previously, scientists had successfully produced insulin through genetically modified cattle, genetically modified sheep, and the like.

The results of the researchers will be published in the new issue of the "Journal of the National Academy of Sciences."
