Recently, it was learned from the Hefei Institute of Material Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that researchers at the Institute of Technology and Biology have made new progress in the research on the prevention and control of wheat ear germination, using the power of science and technology to put on the nano "raincoat" for wheat. Relevant results have been published by ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, the core journal of the American Chemical Society's Green Chemistry field.
According to reports, the researchers at the Institute of Technology and Biotechnology have used modified natural nanomaterials as the main raw material to prepare a wheat germination protection agent, which can replace chemical pesticides to prevent and control ear germination. This result is of great significance for improving wheat quality and reducing the environmental release of chemical pesticides.
As a worldwide agricultural problem, wheat ear germination not only affects the yield, but also seriously reduces the processing quality and seed value of wheat, resulting in significant economic losses.
Breeding germination resistant varieties, suitable sowing and harvesting, and chemical control are common practices for preventing and controlling ear germination. In this study, a hydrophobic nanomaterial was prepared by modifying the attapulgite of natural nanomaterials. The material forms a dense hydrophobic structure on the surface of wheat grains, which significantly inhibits the respiration and absorption of water by wheat seeds. The technology has the advantages of simple use and environmental friendliness, and has a good application prospect.
