How to choose the small-tail sheep species ewe

In livestock production, especially when raising ewes, it's essential to select animals that exhibit strong fertility and maternal traits. These characteristics ensure that the ewes can give birth multiple times within a year, often delivering twins or even triplets. The lambs born should be of good size and vitality, and the ewes must have sufficient milk production and overall health to support their offspring. To achieve this, breeders should focus on several key factors when selecting ewes: First, consider the body size. Medium-sized ewes are generally preferred, as larger ewes tend to produce heavier lambs at birth, which can lead to faster early growth. However, excessively large ewes may suffer from lower reproductive performance due to various physiological or environmental reasons. Conversely, smaller ewes might produce lighter lambs, which could hinder their growth potential. Next, pay attention to the tail shape. A desirable trait is a square peach-shaped (or fan-shaped) tail, but it should be thin and not overly large. Ewes with thick, heavy tails often have lower productivity, such as giving birth to only one lamb per year. The mental state of the ewe is also important. Choose those that are lively, alert, and have a strong appetite. These traits are often associated with higher lambing rates and better maternal instincts. Avoid ewes that appear dull, unresponsive, timid, or have poor eating habits, as these individuals may produce weaker lambs with slower growth. Breast development is another critical factor. Ewes with well-developed udders during pregnancy and full, firm teats after giving birth typically have stronger milk production. This ensures that their lambs grow quickly and remain healthy. Additionally, ewes with a clean, open eye and a strong, active demeanor often show better lactation abilities. Finally, look at the overall appearance. Ewes with thin abdominal hair, a visible "grass belly" (indicating good digestion and metabolism), a refined head, straight back, and straight legs are ideal. Their coat should be white, or have only a small amount of black spots, unless they are of a special breed. Avoid ewes with dense fur, large horns, sunken flanks, irregular limbs, or excessive color variation, as these traits may indicate lower quality or reduced productivity. By carefully evaluating these traits, breeders can select high-quality ewes that contribute to more productive and profitable sheep farming.
