Intel pilot family medical digitalization

Release date: 2008-11-20

Caring for elderly individuals or those with long-term health conditions can be both time-consuming and physically demanding. However, the rapid advancement of information technology is helping to ease this burden significantly. Recently, Intel, a leading chip manufacturer, introduced a groundbreaking home healthcare solution called the Intel Health Guide, which represents one of the most innovative products in the medical field.

The Intel Health Guide functions as a portable computer that continuously tracks vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure. It connects to a medical center via the internet, allowing doctors and nurses to access real-time patient data and offer medical advice through video calls. This system is especially beneficial for patients with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease, enabling them to receive continuous care from the comfort of their homes.

Designed with a sleek, white finish and weighing around 3.8 kilograms, the device features a 10.4-inch color touch screen and operates as a compact computer. In July of this year, it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It can connect via wired or wireless means to devices like blood pressure monitors, transmitting real-time health data directly to the medical center's database.

In China, many households already own blood pressure monitors, but the Intel Health Guide takes this a step further by linking these devices directly to medical centers. Through its management software, healthcare professionals can access a patient’s complete medical history at any time. Additionally, the device includes a built-in microphone and camera, enabling remote video consultations between patients and medical staff for timely medical guidance.

Rather than being sold directly to consumers, the Intel Health Guide is distributed to healthcare institutions, as it is more than just a personal device—it is part of a comprehensive system designed for professional use. This approach ensures that medical staff can efficiently manage patient data and focus more on direct patient care rather than administrative tasks.

Several leading medical institutions in the U.S., including the Mayo Clinic and the American Heart Association, have already adopted this technology. In China, the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (also known as 301 Hospital) has also integrated Intel’s solution into its healthcare services. This innovation marks a significant step forward in the integration of technology and medicine, offering a more efficient and accessible way to monitor and manage chronic conditions. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
