Intel pilot family medical digitalization

Release date: 2008-11-20

Providing care for the elderly or individuals with long-term health conditions can be extremely time-consuming and physically demanding. However, advancements in information technology are beginning to change this landscape. Recently, Intel, a leading chip manufacturer, introduced a groundbreaking home healthcare solution called the Intel Health Guide. This innovative device represents a significant leap forward in remote patient monitoring.
The Intel Health Guide is essentially a small computer that allows patients to continuously track vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure. It connects to a medical center via the internet, enabling doctors and nurses to access real-time health data and provide timely medical advice through video consultations. This system is particularly beneficial for patients with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, and heart disease, as it allows for continuous home-based monitoring.
The device has a sleek, white design and weighs approximately 3.8 kilograms. It features a 10.4-inch color touchscreen and functions as a compact computing unit. In July of this year, the Intel Health Guide received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It can connect via wired or wireless means to devices like blood pressure monitors, transmitting real-time health data directly to the medical center's database.
In China, many households already own blood pressure monitors, but the Intel Health Guide takes this a step further by linking these devices directly to healthcare providers. With its management software, doctors and nurses can access all patient records instantly from the medical center. Additionally, the device includes a built-in microphone and camera, allowing for video calls between patients and healthcare professionals, making remote medical consultations more effective and accessible.
Unlike traditional consumer electronics, the Intel Health Guide is not sold directly to individuals. Instead, it is distributed through medical institutions, as it operates as part of a larger, integrated system that requires professional oversight.
This technology significantly reduces the administrative burden on healthcare staff, minimizing the time spent on paperwork and allowing them to focus more on direct patient care. Several major medical institutions in the U.S., including the Mayo Clinic and the American Heart Association, have already adopted this solution. In China, the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (also known as 301 Hospital) has also implemented Intel’s product. ——Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
