In mountainous regions, the cultivation of pollution-free eggplant using natural resources has become a promising approach for boosting local economies and improving farmers' livelihoods. The market window for this crop typically runs from mid to late July through mid to late October, when supply is limited, prices are high, and profits are significant. This makes it an effective strategy for developing mountainous areas. In recent years, the area dedicated to eggplant farming in Jiande City's mountainous regions has grown steadily. By 2006, three villages—Yao Village in Qiantan Town, Fenghuang Village in Sandu Town, and Sanxi Village in Lijia Town—had already exceeded 333 hectares, making eggplant a key industry in the region. The cultivation techniques used include careful variety selection, proper seedling preparation, and effective field management. Two popular varieties are Hangjiang No. 1 and Hangzhou Red Solanum. Hangjiang No. 1 is known for its strong growth, cold resistance, and high yield, producing long, uniform fruits with a purple, translucent skin and tender flesh. It is resistant to several diseases and can yield up to 4,000 kg per 667 square meters. On the other hand, Hangzhou Red Solanum is a local variety with a compact plant structure, producing slender, bright purple fruits that are flavorful and widely preferred. Sowing times vary depending on elevation, with higher altitudes requiring earlier planting. Seedlings are prepared in fertile, well-drained soil, and seeds are treated with hot water and fungicides to enhance germination and disease resistance. Proper watering, temperature control, and nutrient management during the seedling stage ensure strong, healthy plants before transplanting. Once transplanted, consistent irrigation and fertilization are essential to support growth. Fertilizer application is carefully timed, and pest and disease control measures are implemented regularly using safe, low-toxicity pesticides. Pruning helps improve air circulation and fruit quality, while staking prevents plants from lodging. Harvesting should be done at the right time, based on fruit maturity rather than just timing. Early and frequent harvesting ensures better quality and market value. After picking, fruits are sorted, packaged, and transported efficiently to maintain freshness and maximize returns. This sustainable agricultural practice not only supports local farmers but also promotes eco-friendly farming methods, ensuring long-term benefits for both the environment and the community.
