Milk goats are highly adaptable, have low feed requirements, and a high reproductive rate, making them easy to raise. When bred properly, they can produce milk for up to 300 days a year, yielding between 400 to 600 kg of fresh milk. This makes them a profitable option for farmers looking to boost their income. They can be fed with various plant-based materials such as weeds, leaves, vines, melon beans, bran cakes, and mixed grains, but it's essential to manage their diet according to their growth stages for optimal health and productivity.
Pregnant ewes should not be subjected to poor feeding conditions or frequent dietary changes during the first 30 days of pregnancy. After natural mating, it is recommended to allow the females to interact with rams or view them through a fence 18 to 25 days later to confirm pregnancy. During this time, they should receive nutrient-rich feeds to maintain good body condition and remain active. In the final month of pregnancy, nutritional intake should gradually increase to support milk production, but overfeeding must be avoided to prevent excessive fat accumulation, which could reduce milk yield. Instead, high-quality, balanced feeds are preferred over high-energy options.
Newborn lambs rely on colostrum within the first 10 days, which is rich in nutrients and antibodies that help strengthen their immune system. The lamb should consume at least 1/5 of its body weight in colostrum. If the mother is unable to provide enough, artificial feeding can begin after six days. From day 10 onward, lambs can be fed whole milk until about 40 days of age. At the same time, small amounts of easily digestible concentrate and hay should be introduced to support digestive development. Between 40 and 80 days, lambs should be given a mix of milk, grass, and grain, including high-quality legume hay, barley, oats, corn, bran, and soybean meal. Weaning can start around 80 to 120 days, depending on the availability of quality forage and supplements. With proper nutrition, weaning can occur as early as 90 days without affecting growth.
Lactating ewes require a balanced diet to support milk production. In summer and autumn, they should receive 5 kg of fresh grass or sweet potato vines, plus 0.25 kg of corn meal, 5 g of bone meal, and 10 g of salt, along with clean water. In winter and spring, 2 kg of high-quality hay or dried vines, combined with 300 g of corn flour, 5 g of bone meal, and 10 g of salt, should be provided. As milk output increases, the amount of concentrates should also rise. For example, ewes producing 1.5 to 2.5 kg of milk daily should get 0.5 to 0.7 kg of corn flour, while those producing 3 to 3.5 kg need 0.8 to 1 kg. Ewes should be kept in groups and allowed to graze for 2 to 3 hours daily to promote exercise and sun exposure. Maintaining clean living conditions is crucial for their health and well-being.
