A new state law that protects young people in Minnesota from the harmful effects of tobacco products entered into force on August 1.
The legislature in 2010 passed the "Tobacco Industry Modernization and Compliance Act," and was formally signed by Governor Tim Pawlenty.
The new law stipulates that the current national tobacco tax system and regulations apply equally to smokeless tobacco products that attract young consumers through low prices.
Specific legal provisions are as follows:
- Expand the definition of tobacco products, including any products containing tobacco leaves for human consumption.
- All tobacco products and tobacco-related equipment are required to be sold under the counter so that they are not easily accessible to young people.
- Prohibit the sale of new tobacco products and electronic cigarettes to young people.
