Sightseeing wood

Sightseeing wood, also known as Xiangmu or Suxi Magnolia, is the sole species within the Magnolia genus. It is classified as a nationally protected plant of Grade II due to its rarity and ecological importance. Native to central and southern China, this tree is renowned for its ornamental value and aromatic properties. It stands out among other magnolia species such as Lechang, Xiaoshan, and Shanlian, making it a unique addition to the botanical world. In recent years, demand for sightseeing wood has surged, with market prices slightly higher than those of similar species like Lechang. This tall, evergreen tree features a straight and elegant trunk, dense branches, and thick, glossy leaves. The leaves are broad, cone-shaped, oval, or oblong, with a shiny surface and golden veins on the underside. Their petioles are bright yellow, creating a striking visual effect. From March to April, it blooms with beautiful purple flowers that emit a pleasant fragrance, easily detectable up to 100 meters away. Because of its floral beauty, it has earned names like "Incense Tree" and "Fragrant Flower Tree." Sightseeing wood typically begins to flower after about six to seven years, and its fruiting cycle is irregular, contributing to its scarcity. The fruits are curved and clustered, gradually changing from blue to red as they mature. Each fruit weighs between 0.4 kg and 1.2 kg, and when fully ripe, they create a visually stunning display. The tree has well-developed roots, which play an important role in water conservation. With its distinctive horticultural traits, it is a fast-growing, rare tree that offers both aesthetic value through its flowers and fruits. Sightseeing wood is widely used in landscaping for scenic areas, walkways, and courtyards. Whether planted individually or in groups, it creates a beautiful natural landscape. Its high-quality wood makes it suitable for large-scale planting on hillsides. It thrives in wet, humid environments and prefers acidic to neutral soils, making it ideal for cultivation in the Huai River Basin and southern regions. In Dayu County, Jiangxi Province, sightseeing wood has achieved large-scale development. Seed propagation is the primary method, with seeds appearing as pure, brown-black triangular diamonds. Seeds are harvested in mid to early October when they begin to crack slightly, yielding about 3.5 pounds of pure seeds per kilogram of fresh fruit. These seeds are sown in sand beds and germinate between February and March. Farmers use farmyard manure as base fertilizer, apply open channel ditch methods, and space seedlings at 15 cm by 8 cm intervals. They cover the soil with 2 cm of soil and grass for insulation. After two harvest periods, the grass cover is removed, resulting in a germination rate of approximately 85%. Within one year, seedlings can grow up to 35–85 cm in height. They are transplanted in winter or the following spring, with a planting density of 2200 plants per mu using a 70 cm by 40 cm spacing. After 3–4 years of growth, they can reach over 3 meters in height.
