Happy pig raising happy pig
In the remote minority areas of Yunnan, raising pigs has become a vital way for families to boost their income. However, with growing concerns over the quality and safety of agricultural products, ensuring the safety of meat from small-scale households and promoting sustainable livestock farming have become pressing issues. The Yunnan provincial government and local enterprises are actively working together to find innovative solutions.
One such solution is the "fermentation bed" system, which offers a clean, healthy, and eco-friendly way to raise pigs. In early September, as the weather in Xiangyun County remained hot, many farmers struggled with traditional pigsties—full of flies, foul smells, and messy conditions. But for Li Rongfa, a farmer in Yulong Village, things were different. His pigsty had no unpleasant odor. Instead, it was clean and well-maintained, with a 50-cm thick layer of grass litter on the floor. Pigs roamed freely, and there was no visible manure or flies.
This method, known as the ecological health pig-rearing technique, uses a mix of sawdust, straw, rice husks, and rice bran combined with probiotics. The fermentation process allows pig waste to decompose quickly, eliminating odors and turning the waste into beneficial feed that pigs can eat. This not only reduces the need for daily cleaning but also improves the pigs' health and digestion.
The result is a happier, healthier environment for the pigs. They play, roll in the litter, and seem content. According to Qing Liwen, CEO of Kunming Bairier Feed Technology Co., this method helps control pork quality from the source by reducing disease and improving feed efficiency.
Pigs raised in this way also experience fewer digestive issues. The use of bioactive feed rich in enzymes and Chinese herbs helps break down tough fibers, leading to better digestion and less odor. Farmers like Liu Xiaofen report significant savings in both feed and medication costs, with each pig generating over 100 yuan in profit annually.
To ensure widespread adoption, the company focuses on education and community building. Scientists and technicians are sent to villages to teach farmers about proper feeding, disease prevention, and breeding practices. Regular public lectures and hands-on training help farmers understand and benefit from these new methods.
A key part of the system is the economic partnership between the company and local farmers. Breeding units are formed, where one household acts as a benchmark to oversee others. If a farmer fails to meet the company’s standards, all in the unit may lose the benefit of higher-price recycling. Additionally, service departments in each village help manage technology, sales, and support, ensuring smooth operations.
With technological support and financial incentives, farmers feel secure and motivated. Happy pigs lead to better returns, and the whole system benefits everyone involved. It's a model that combines sustainability, profitability, and community empowerment, showing how innovation can transform rural livelihoods.
